The Final Project
Are you ready to think like a Broadway producer?
Over the course of this semester, we will study 7-10 musicals and learn how/why they were produced on Broadway. As we learn from the past, we will try to break the social injustices around race, gender, sexuality and story-telling in musical theatre.
Your final project will be to announce what two musicals you will be producing in the 2020-21 Broadway season.
You will be announcing your season in front of a panel of professionals that will judge whether or not your choices of show will challenge the political and social landscape of 2020. Ultimately, they will look at whether or not these stories NEED to be told today. You will include one musical revival and either a brand new musical or BIPOC-centered show.
Throughout the semester we will learn a deep dive through 7-10 musicals that will give you insight on casting choices, new artistic voices, BIPOC perspective, diversity and inclusion, understanding your audience, and marketing/branding your musicals. This will all help you present your two-show season.
Three questions:
Why is the story important to tell in 2020?
How will it be updated to create a greater understanding of diversity and inclusion?
How do we dismantle white privilege with this revival?
